In support of designing a closure cover system for acid-generating waste rock, Okane completed calibration and predictive soil-plant-atmosphere modelling, designed and instrumented cover system field trials for flat and sloping areas, and interpreted field performance monitoring data over a 15 year period.

The cover system design was revised in response to increased knowledge of the mechanisms and controls on acid metalliferous drainage (AMD) production, the advantages of this being:

  • the cover system works in concert with natural systems rather than in opposition;
  • the cover system thickness and materials can be refined, optimising material handling requirements and overall costs of implementation; and,
  • long term results and trends can be used to assist in the development of new designs, particularly in similar climates.
