Tailings Facility Closure, Saskatchewan, Canada

Okane was retained to design, implement, maintain, and interpret the performance monitoring system for a tailings facility.

The cover system was designed to reduce the infiltration of meteoric water into the underlying tailings, attenuate radiation emanating from the stored waste to acceptable levels, and provide a growth medium for development of a sustainable vegetation cover. Field data being collected at the soil cover system monitoring stations include various meteorological parameters, in situ volumetric water content, suction (i.e., negative pore-water pressure), and temperature in the cover system and upper tailings profile, as well as groundwater levels.
