Waste Rock and Coal Reject Storage Facility Investigation, British Columbia, Canada
Okane undertook the installation of pore-gas chemistry, temperature, water level, and water chemistry sensors at multiple levels in waste rock and coarse coal reject storage facilities at coal operations in British Columbia, Canada.
Air rotary and sonic drilling techniques were used for sensor installation. Water sampling ports with dedicated dual-valve pumps and vibrating wire piezometers were installed when water saturation was encountered. Data gathered by this instrumentation is used to understand depth profiles of pore-gas concentrations, differential pore-gas pressure, water vapour isotope composition, and temperature. This study allows for quantification of key controls on release rates of selenium and other compounds of interest from unsaturated waste storage facilities.
